How To Find a Drink In Salt Lake City, Our Liquor Laws

Explaining Our Quirky Liquor Laws.

Thanks to our Governor and the Utah Legislature, getting a drink in Salt Lake City is just like the rest of the country.

There are over 400 places where you can get a drink in Utah, and since 2009, getting into a bar is even easier.

Private Clubs are a thing of the past.
Now, you walk into a bar and order a drink, just like the rest of the country. Also, just like the rest of the country, you have to be 21 to enter. Verifying someones age is easier here. If you look younger than 35, they will ask for your ID. Preferably your drivers license. It will be scanned in seconds, and if it's valid, your'e in. So, if you're looking for a bar near your hotel, a unique sports bar, a local brew pub or just to relax with a nice glass of wine, you'll find it easily in Salt Lake.

Liquor
You can have drinks in Salt Lake bars, restaurants, and you can buy bottles of your favorite liquor at state liquor stores listed below.

Restaurants
This is the confusing and embarrassing part of our state. Having a drink, a beer or a glass of wine with dinner, no problem. But, your server should ask you whether you will be eating - if you ask for a drink first. If you are not asked about food, and you are served a cocktail before you read the menu, it's a violation of a ridiculous law that at times can get the owner of a restaurant fined or they can lose their liquor license. Our Utah liquor official's latest reports are downplaying this law and the enforcement of it because they are afraid of negative media especially with our high tourism season in full swing. I wouldn't worry about it. Try a restaurant of your choice, relax, enjoy, have fun, experience a great meal and if you want - have a drink.

Wine
Wine is served in restaurants, bars and can also be purchased at the state liquor stores.

Beer
Full-strength beer, 4% and up to 12% is sold in some bars and restaurants and the state owned liquor stores. But, what sucks about it is, that it's only bottled beer, not tap or draft. Beer on tap, or draft beer as it is known in Salt Lake's bars and restaurants is only 3.2% or less. You can also buy full-strength bottled beer at state liquor stores (see addresses below) . You can purchase 3.2% beer at the grocery and convenience stores. With the elevation of 4000 feet plus above sea level, getting a "Buzz" on, happens very quickly! And if you're up in Park City at over 7000 feet above sea level, we advise you to watch what you drink, take cabs, have a designated driver, and just be careful. Our DUI/DWI Laws are the strictest in the nation!
